Why 4 gospels

Mark intentionally groups events and teachings according to theme. He sandwiches these events so they lend meaning to one another. Numerous times Jesus commands demons, the people He heals, and even His disciples to keep quiet about His identity. Luke has the largest vocabulary and uses fine literary Greek. His extended preface is modeled after prologues of Hellenistic Greek histories and Graeco-Roman literature and displays great artistic skill —4. John also wields dramatic irony.

The kingdom of God or the kingdom of heaven; condemnation of wealth used inappropriately —31; As you closely read each Gospel, consider how individual events fit within each Gospel narrative.

Originally published in print, Vol. Bible Study Magazine is the only award-winning magazine devoted to making your Bible Study more effective, organized, and relevant.

This print publication delivers tools and methods for Bible study, and insights from respected scholars and church leaders six times a year. In defense of the Christian faith, many others have gone to great lengths to harmonize the stories of the Gospels and force them into some non-contradictory, and indefensible, narrative. However, both extreme approaches to the four Gospels miss the real point behind their writing and existence in the Bible.

Matthew is the most Jewish of the Gospels. It seeks to tell the story of Jesus Christ to a distinctively Jewish audience. Ultimately, Mark concludes with an implicit call to action. This Gospel tells a powerful story with a challenge that essentially asks believers what they will do with what they now know.

Luke is a sophisticated account of the life of Jesus that is intended to appeal to educated Greeks that were a whole generation removed from the life and ministry of Jesus Christ and who are no longer interested in mythical stories from the past but want a conclusive argument in support of the validity of the historical figure of Jesus Christ. It is not presented to convert people to Christianity from other religious traditions, but is written to devoted, committed Christians in the Church that John founded and led.
