Introduction Have you ever considered taking a nighttime nature walk? Would you wait until there is a full moon so you could benefit from sunlight reflected from the moon—or would you rather take a flashlight? Do you think trees would look black, green or gray in the dark? Try this activity to examine your night vision and prepare for your next nighttime adventure! Background Sight begins when light enters the eye. This light triggers light-sensitive cells in the retina at the back of the eye.
As a result signals zoom along the optic nerve to the brain. The brain then makes sense of the signals, giving us the experience of seeing. The pupil is the opening in the middle of the front of the eye that allows light to enter. Humans have round pupils. They appear black because light almost never escapes through them. The colored part around the pupil called the iris adjusts the size of the pupil. Its main function is to regulate the amount of light that enters the eye.
In dim light the pupils dilate open wider so more light can enter. Switch to bright light and the pupils automatically contract. This is the result of a nerve signal generated in the back of the eye triggering the muscles in the iris. Because some nerve connections cross over to the other eye, both pupils contract in unison. Observations and results Did the pupils expand when exposed to a low-light environment and contract when there was plenty of light? Were you able to recognize objects in dim light but unable to recognize their colors?
That is what our eyes are designed for. Pupil size changes to optimize vision in a large range of light conditions. When there is bright light a smaller opening in the eye—or a smaller pupil—protects the back of the eye from getting damaged.
Reading Eyes. While the saying "the eyes are the window the soul" may not be scientifically accurate, studies have shown that eyes can, in fact, be a window into someone's emotions and feelings. Pupils can change dramatically not only with different emotions, but also are can be affected by medications, lighting conditions and by what you have ingested.
However, there can be more serious reasons for changes in pupil size, such as an injury to the brain and certain rare conditions, like Horner's Syndrome. Pupil size changes and variations can be normal and in many cases are harmless, which can occur for varying reasons.
A past physical injury to the eye can affect the pupil size too, just look at David Bowie's left eye for example. Cause for Concern? If you have noticed a recent significant change in the size or shape of one or both of your pupils, there could be an underlying issue, in which case, we highly recommend you book an appointment with an ophthalmologist to have it checked out.

Thanks for all the amazing wonders I always read 1 ever night! This slows your eyes' ability to react to light. This is an unusual but harmless condition where a person experiences sporadic episodes of one pupil suddenly becoming dilated, often accompanied by blurry vision, headache and eye pain.
Young women who are prone to migraine appear to have the highest risk of benign episodic unilateral mydriasis. In one study, the median duration of the episodes was 12 hours some lasted much longer and the median frequency was two to three episodes per month. Also called Adie's tonic pupil or tonic pupil , this is a rare neurological disorder where one pupil is larger than normal and is slow to react to light.
Sometimes, the pupil does not constrict at all. This pupil abnormality may be accompanied by poor or absent tendon reflexes. When this occurs, the condition is called Adie's syndrome. Generally, the cause of Adie's tonic pupil is unknown; but in some cases, it may be associated with trauma, surgery, poor blood circulation or infection.
There's no cure for Adie's pupil or Adie's syndrome. This is a rare condition where a person is born with a partially or completely absent iris, resulting in a very large "pupil. Because there is little or no iris to regulate the amount of light entering the eye, people with aniridia are very sensitive to light. It's true — researchers have found that pupil dilation appears to correspond to adult men and women's sexual interest in other adults.
But there's a catch. One recent study showed that the pupils of male subjects dilated when they viewed images of women they found sexually attractive, whereas the pupils of female subjects typically dilated in response to images of attractive men and women alike. The study authors concluded the reason for this is unclear and that further research is warranted.
If you or someone else notices you have dilated pupils or one of your pupils looks larger than the other after head trauma, seek medical attention immediately.
